A 65-year-old highways worker from Kent was killed in a collision on the M23 motorway near London Gatwick Airport shortly before 01:00 BST on Wednesday. The incident occurred on the southbound carriageway at Junction 9 near Crawley.
A 38-year-old man from Croydon, who was driving a van involved in the crash, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving and remains in custody. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
The southbound M23 between Junctions 8 and 10 was closed for police investigations, causing delays for motorists heading to Gatwick Airport before fully reopening in the afternoon. National Highways advised drivers to prepare for extreme heat amid the disruption.
