Kate O'Connor claimed heptathlon gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Tuesday, securing Northern Ireland's first athletics gold at the Games since 1986. The 25-year-old from Newry finished with 6,569 points across the two-day competition at Scotstoun Stadium.
O'Connor sealed victory in the final event, winning the 800m in 2:10.45 to extend her lead. Jade O'Dowda took silver with 6,278 points and Tori West earned bronze on 6,104. O'Connor had led by 59 points after day one, posting marks including 13.54 seconds in the 100m hurdles and 1.82m in the high jump.
The silver medallist from 2022 benefited from the absence of Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who missed the event through injury.
