Kaiserslautern and Karlsruhe play out goalless draw in sold-out southwest derby

· Sports DEU
  1. FC Kaiserslautern and Karlsruher SC played out a 0-0 draw in Friday's southwest derby at a sold-out Fritz-Walter-Stadion before 49,327 spectators in the second tier of German football.

Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Julian Krahl proved decisive, denying Karlsruhe striker Moritz Broschinski and recovering from a defensive error by Jacob Rasmussen with a string of saves to preserve the point. Substitute Ibrahim Kanaté came closest for the hosts, but Karlsruhe defender Marcel Franke cleared off the line in the 48th minute. Both sides lost players to injury before halftime, with Naatan Skyttä and Broschinski departing early. Kaiserslautern's Mergim Berisha struck the outside of the net in the 22nd minute. Isolated pyrotechnics were set off during the match.

The free-to-air broadcast on RTL marked a rare primetime slot for second-division football. Kaiserslautern, who won both meetings with Karlsruhe last season, now have 26 wins to Karlsruhe's 16 in the all-time series, with 27 draws.
