Italy's business registry grows by nearly 33,000 in second quarter

Italy's business base expanded in the second quarter of 2026, with new registrations outpacing closures by 32,709 units between April and June. The net gain followed 83,169 new business registrations against 50,460 closures, bringing the total number of registered firms to 5,823,863.

The quarterly growth rate stood at 0.56%, unchanged from the same period a year earlier, even as both openings and closures accelerated. New registrations rose from 80,205 in the second quarter of 2025, while closures climbed from 47,405 over the same comparison.

Artisan enterprises also posted a gain, adding 5,201 firms on a growth rate of 0.43%. The segment recorded 21,542 new registrations and 16,341 closures, bringing the total stock of artisan businesses to 1,226,925.
