Italian authorities detained 79 suspects on Tuesday in a sweeping operation against 'Ndrangheta mafia clans in Reggio Calabria, dealing a significant blow to the powerful criminal syndicate.
Seventy-three suspects were placed in pre-trial detention and six under house arrest, targeting members of the De Stefano, Tegano, and Condello clans. The accused face charges including mafia association, drug trafficking, extortion, illegal weapons possession, and robbery. More than 500 police and Carabinieri officers took part in the raids.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented on the operation in a post on X. The 'Ndrangheta, based in Calabria, is considered one of Italy's most powerful and internationally entrenched organized crime groups.
