Taoiseach Micheál Martin has given a conditional commitment to consider a statutory public inquiry into the Creeslough explosion if ongoing investigations fail to provide adequate answers to victims' families. Following a meeting with relatives on Wednesday, Martin emphasised the importance of allowing current inquiries to conclude before considering further steps.
The explosion at a service station in County Donegal on 7 October 2022 killed ten people, including three children. A Garda investigation remains ongoing, with a second file containing formal recommendations sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in April 2026. The Health and Safety Authority report is expected to be finalised shortly.
Martin told families that if ongoing inquiries do not yield sufficient answers, the government would consider establishing a statutory inquiry to examine the circumstances of the tragedy.
