A 63-year-old Iraqi man who trigger a major security alert at Dublin Airport's Terminal 1 by claiming his luggage contained explosives and a firearm avoided a jail sentence and a criminal record, in an incident that saw him miss his daughter's wedding.
Jamal Hameed pleaded guilty in April 2026 to causing a false alarm on 22 December 2025, telling airport officials the claim was intended as a joke. The disruption led to the cancellation of flights for Hameed and several relatives, preventing him from attending the ceremony.
Judge Karen Dowling applied the Probation of Offenders Act, sparing him both imprisonment and a permanent record. Hameed, originally from Iraq, has resided in Ireland for five years.
