Iranian hackers target UK power generator and US water systems in coordinated cyber attacks

· Technology GBRUSAIRN

Iranian-affiliated hackers forced a UK power generator offline for four days in what is believed to be the first successful strike on a British energy facility of its kind. The small-scale generator was not connected to the wider grid, and the incident was reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.

The attack coincided with a series of cyber intrusions targeting water systems across 12 US states, which American authorities attribute to Iran. Untreated groundwater entered supply lines in the affected areas. US officials are now warning that Iranian hackers are targeting Siemens S7-series controllers used in critical infrastructure, urging operators to disconnect the devices from the internet and update their software immediately.

NCSC head Richard Horne warned that most significant cyber attacks on Britain originate from hostile states including China, Iran, and Russia. GCHQ has developed plans for a national AI cyber shield.
