Member states of the International Criminal Court voted on Friday to remove chief prosecutor Karim Khan from his post following allegations of sexual misconduct against a female colleague.
In a secret ballot at the Assembly of States Parties at United Nations headquarters in New York, 82 of the court's 125 member states voted in favour of dismissal, with 13 against and 15 abstentions. The decision required an absolute majority of at least 63 states to pass.
Khan, a British lawyer who had been suspended since June, categorically denied the allegations. His lawyer stated he intends to fight the removal through legal channels. The process was initiated after accusations of inappropriate sexual behaviour towards an assistant surfaced.
