UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has nominated Turk to serve through 2030, but Moscow tabled a counterproposal to extend his tenure by just over two months only until the end of 2026, when Turk's current term expires in October. Israel backs the shorter timeline, objecting to a full second mandate.
The decision rests with the General Assembly, where Security Council veto powers do not apply, giving smaller nations equal weight with permanent members.
