Around 300,000 people took to the streets of Hamburg on Saturday for the city's Christopher Street Day parade, marking a record turnout just one week after a deadly Islamist attack on a similar event in Berlin.
The peaceful demonstration proceeded under the motto "Solidary queer. Taking a stand — for a future without fear!" with 60 trucks serving as rolling stages through the city center. Police doubled their deployment compared with last year and installed concrete barriers following the Berlin rampage, in which a 21-year-old attacker killed a Polish woman and injured 31 others before being shot dead by officers.
Participants, including drag queen Olivia Jones and senior politicians, wore black armbands in solidarity with Berlin. Pride events across Europe, from Amsterdam to Stockholm, echoed the defiance, with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten joining Amsterdam's canal parade.
