Heatwave pushes temperatures near 40C across Germany and Austria with storms expected

A sweltering heatwave is gripping Germany and Austria, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius in parts of Germany and as high as 39 degrees in eastern Austria early this week. The German Weather Service said the heat would peak on Tuesday, with the southeast bearing the brunt, while tropical nights above 20 degrees were expected in western urban areas overnight into Tuesday.

The intense heat brings severe weather risks. Heavy downpours and violent thunderstorms threaten southwestern Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Alb region and Upper Swabia particularly exposed. In the east, a Level 1 heat warning covers parts of southern Brandenburg, and storms may strike northern Brandenburg overnight into Wednesday.

Relief is gradual. Temperatures across Germany are expected to drop to between 24 and 30 degrees by Thursday, while hail remains a risk across parts of the Austrian Alps earlier in the week.
