Germany's estimated heat-related death toll has reached roughly 12,500 through early August, the Robert Koch Institute reported, after previously revising upward fatalities from a searing late-June week. An additional 2,700 deaths have been recorded since mid-July, with the cumulative figure now exceeding the 9,400 deaths recorded in the record year of 2018.
Southwestern states have been disproportionately affected. Baden-Württemberg accounts for an estimated 2,680 deaths, or more than a fifth of the national total, while Rheinland-Pfalz has recorded roughly 1,600 fatalities — surpassing any full-year total since 2016. The Saarland posted the highest per-capita rate at 43.4 deaths per 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 15.
Men under 75 died at higher rates than women in younger cohorts, while more than half of all victims were 85 or older.
