Germany's Social Association VdK has urged residents to file initial applications for care grades as quickly as possible before a government reform potentially tightens eligibility rules next year.
The draft Care Reorganization Act, originally introduced by former Health Minister Nina Warken and now overseen by her successor Carsten Linnemann, would narrow the criteria for new assessments and could raise the bar for care grades one through three. VdK President Verena Bentele noted the legislation has not yet passed and current rules still apply, adding that applicants approved this year would retain their grade even if standards tighten. The group cautioned, however, that those already holding a care grade should think carefully before requesting an upgrade.
The Health Ministry says the overhaul aims to stabilize care insurance finances as the number of people needing care in Germany has surpassed six million. Bentele discouraged hesitation, saying a care application is not a stigma but a vital step toward remaining at home.
