Out-of-pocket nursing home costs in Germany have surged, with residents paying an average of 3,364 euros per month in their first year as of July 2026 — a 256-euro increase from a year earlier.
Regional disparities remain stark. Bremen recorded the highest monthly burden at 3,761 euros, while Saxony-Anhalt was the lowest at 2,891 euros. In Hamburg, costs jumped 302 euros year-on-year to 3,481 euros, outpacing the national trend. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, residents now pay 3,032 euros monthly, up 280 euros.
The rising costs reflect higher charges for both pure care, now 2,088 euros monthly, and accommodation. With a 7.6-billion-euro deficit projected for the care insurance fund in 2027, a planned reform would suspend tariff-based nurse pay for four years and stretch relief subsidies to ease financial pressure.
