Police in the Baltic resort of Kühlungsborn are investigating a suspected violation of animal protection laws after a dead duck was found on the beach, having been killed by stones thrown by children.
The incident, which lasted roughly 30 to 45 minutes, came to light after an online complaint was filed last Thursday alongside a Facebook post about the episode. Animal rights activist Karin Stüver of the group Kuebocats filed the police report. Investigators are examining whether the children, aged between 10 and 12, targeted the bird deliberately or struck it accidentally. The children's parents have contacted police and denied any intent. The children are below the age of criminal responsibility under German law.
The mothers of the children reportedly did not intervene despite appeals from other beachgoers. The Arbeiterwohlfahrt in Rostock has publicly commented on the case.
