German authorities have launched a large-scale operation to collect DNA from roughly 250 residents of a 22-storey tower block in Kiel, following a June 2 incident in which a chunk of pavement was hurled from the building onto a police patrol car, shattering its windscreen. The 59-year-old driver escaped harm, but a 25-year-old female officer was struck in the hand and ankle and remains off duty. Prosecutors are treating the act as attempted homicide.
The mass screening, ordered by a Kiel district court and backed by a reward of 1,000 euros, is targeting every resident aged 14 or older at the time of the offense. Participation is technically voluntary under the court order, and residents were temporarily barred from leaving the building while samples were taken.
Investigators recovered DNA traces on the stone fragment, which measured roughly 10 by 20 centimetres, and hope the sweep will identify the suspect.
