German composer Ralph Siegel has woken from an induced coma following a bout of severe pneumonia, his daughter Laura Siegel confirmed to the Bild newspaper.
Siegel, whose catalogue exceeds 3,000 songs, was placed in the coma in early July after contracting pneumonia while staying at his home in Spain. He is being treated in the intensive care unit of Munich's Harlaching hospital and will remain there for the time being. The wake-up process had been postponed several times before he finally regained consciousness. His half-brother Jörg Woltmann travelled from Berlin to visit him on 16 July.
Siegel, 80, is best known internationally for writing "Ein bisschen Frieden," which won the Eurovision Song Contest for Nicole in 1982. He has faced repeated health setbacks in recent years, including cancer.
