French tourist dies in extreme heat after car breaks down in Death Valley

A 68-year-old French national has died in California's Death Valley after becoming stranded in extreme heat, park officials confirmed.

The man and a companion were traveling on a remote road when their vehicle broke down. With temperatures reaching 46 degrees Celsius (115°F), the pair set out on foot to seek help. After approximately two kilometres, the older man could not continue and stayed behind while his companion pressed on. The companion reached a road and flagged down a passing motorist, prompting park rangers to launch a search. The 68-year-old was later found dead.

Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds called the death "a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can become dangerous." The park service, which warns visitors about extreme summer heat on its website, said forecasts indicate temperatures could exceed 47°C (117°F) over the weekend.
