Zolani Tete, a former two-weight world boxing champion from South Africa, was shot and killed outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on Friday evening. The 38-year-old was attacked by two masked gunmen as he waited for a gate to open at approximately 18:30 local time, Eastern Cape police confirmed.
Tete died at the scene, while a 27-year-old female passenger was also shot and remains hospitalised. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said no arrests have been made and a murder investigation is under way.
Tete held the WBO bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019 and the IBF super-flyweight crown in 2014. He set a Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a title fight, stopping Siboniso Gonya in 11 seconds in 2017. Tete, who finished with a 29-4 record, had recently completed a four-year doping ban and was preparing a return to the ring.
