Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to two years in prison for receiving free opinion polls in exchange for political support, according to a ruling delivered by the Seoul Central District Court on Sunday.
Prosecutors alleged Yoon conspired with his wife, Kim Keon Hee, to obtain 58 opinion polls from Myung Tae Kyun between June 2021 and March 2022 without payment. The court upheld 14 of those polls as illicitly received and ordered the forfeiture of approximately 13.96 million won. Myung was sentenced to 18 months and taken into custody; both he and Yoon have filed appeals. Kim was previously acquitted of identical charges in separate proceedings.
The verdict adds to Yoon's mounting legal troubles: he was sentenced to life in February for insurrection and to 30 years in June for dispatching drones into North Korea.
