A forest fire in the Las Hurdes region of western Spain forced the evacuation of approximately 700 people from nine hamlets across the municipalities of Pinofranqueado and Nuñomoral on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The Junta de Extremadura elevated the Infocaex civil protection plan to operational level 2 at 16:50 hours as the blaze spread near the Salamanca province boundary.
Evacuees were sheltered at a student residence in nearby Caminomorisco, including residents of a disability care facility in La Fragosa. The response drew more than 130 ground personnel and roughly twenty aircraft, including helicopters and amphibious planes. The Military Emergency Unit deployed from Madrid alongside regional crews from Extremadura and Castilla y León.
The area suffered a devastating fire in May 2023 that burned more than 10,000 hectares across Las Hurdes and Sierra de Gata.
