More than 100 firefighters made significant progress against a six-square-kilometre wildfire in Scotland's Cairngorms National Park on Sunday, after the blaze ignited in heathland near Ryvoan Bothy on July 15.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported marked improvements on the western flank and in the Strathnethy area, with six appliances and specialist all-terrain vehicles remaining on scene. Crews drew water from Loch Morlich using a high-volume pump to battle flames that have burned approximately 300 hectares of the RSPB's Loch Garten reserve.
Police Scotland asked displaced residents to register at Macdonald Aviemore Resort between 10:00 and 12:00 on Sunday for re-entry to evacuated homes and businesses. SFRS deputy assistant chief officer Michael Humphreys warned of the unpredictable nature of wildfires, as very high risk conditions persist across parts of Scotland until at least Monday.
