Police arrested 15 people in Glasgow on Saturday after anti-immigration and anti-racism demonstrators clashed near Glasgow Green, prompting a large-scale containment operation across the city centre.
Anti-racism protesters gathered at 11:00, with a Unite the Clans anti-immigration rally beginning an hour later, chanting "send them home" and displaying "stop the boats" placards. Mounted officers attempted to separate the groups as violence erupted. A large contingent then moved from Glasgow Green into the city centre, where police established containments, including on Oswald Street. Officers recovered weapons that Police Scotland Chief Superintendent Emma Croft said indicated pre-meditated disorder, violence, and intimidation. Arrests covered assault, possession of offensive weapons, breach of the peace, obstruction, and resisting arrest.
The confrontation followed unfounded online rumours that a former care home would house asylum seekers and the circulation of personal details of two men suspected in earlier assaults. A video of the clashes was amplified by far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
