More than 2,000 people converged on Funchal Cathedral in Madeira on Saturday after rumours spread that Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez were to be married there, only to discover the ceremony belonged to a local couple.
The crowd mistook the bride, Nicole, for Rodríguez when she arrived in a grey luxury car. A priest emerged to clarify that the football star was not involved, and the Funchal diocese posted photos of the actual wedding on Facebook to help disperse the gathering. One guest told local media the couple "felt like celebrities."
Ronaldo responded to the mix-up with laughing emojis on Instagram. The couple, together since 2016, announced their engagement in 2025, with Ronaldo indicating any wedding would take place after the 2026 World Cup.
