The European Commission opened a tender on Thursday to build up to seven artificial intelligence gigafactories across the European Union, aiming to mobilise more than 30 billion euros in combined public and private investment. Up to 10 billion euros will come from EU and member-state funds, with the remainder expected from private investors. The call, first announced in December 2024, remains open until 12 November, with award decisions expected in early 2027.
The first lot covers four projects receiving 500 million euros each in EU funding, while three further projects will each receive one billion euros. The initiative is co-financed by 18 member states, and the EU has signed processor supply agreements with AMD, Nvidia and Qualcomm.
The Czech Republic has expressed interest in hosting one facility, with Ceske Radiokomunikace prepared to invest roughly 70 billion koruna of the estimated 100-billion-koruna total. Commission Vice-President Henna Virkkunen called the launch a milestone in Europe's AI ambitions.
