X has six months to implement the changes, which include overhauling its advertising repository with improved search functionality, expanding API access, and providing free data to researchers. The company also committed to displaying full ad content and destination URLs, along with new filters based on targeting criteria. An independent external audit will verify compliance, with findings due to the Commission within six months of implementation.
The original fine was tied in part to misleading authentication through X's blue verification checkmark. The penalty had drawn sharp criticism from the U.S. government, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling it an attack on all American tech platforms.
