England's run to the World Cup semi-final has injected hundreds of millions of pounds into the UK economy, with pub takings spiking up to five times the daily average during the group-stage victory over Panama on 27 June. The British Beer and Pub Association expects an extra 6 million pints to be sold on Wednesday as England faces Argentina, a 75% increase over a typical July Wednesday.
Retailers have also benefited. Department store sales rose 9.7% in June and online non-food sales jumped 5.1% year on year, pushing the online penetration rate to 39%. Overall consumer spending climbed 1.9% in June despite 3% inflation, with hospitality bookings up 70% compared to previous tournaments.
Pub chains are bracing for peak demand. Greene King has 50,000 covers booked across 1,000 venues for the semi-final, while Marston's reported sales doubling during the quarter-final win over Norway. The Night Time Industries Association forecasts up to £80m in additional sector revenue. Meanwhile, police in Atlanta have bolstered security ahead of the match amid clashes between Argentina supporters.
