Major-General Fawzi al-Mansouri, head of military intelligence for eastern Libya's self-styled Libyan National Army, was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated under his vehicle in Benghazi late on Monday. The blast tore through al-Mansouri's car in the Hawari district as he was entering the vehicle near his home, according to multiple accounts.

The eastern military command under Khalifa Haftar confirmed the assassination on Tuesday. Eastern government Prime Minister Osama Saad Hammad condemned the killing and pledged to uncover the circumstances of the crime. Al-Mansouri, a senior figure in Haftar's intelligence apparatus, was appointed director of military intelligence in Benghazi with the rank of major-general in 2024.

The assassination coincided with a drone attack that sparked a major fire at the Zawiya refinery, prompting a state of maximum emergency at the facility.
