A driver lost control of his car and ploughed into a street market in the Chilean coastal city of Viña del Mar on Sunday, killing six people and injuring seven others, including two babies, officials said.
The arrested driver, identified as a non-commissioned officer in the naval infantry, told authorities he had fainted before the vehicle struck the crowd. Regional presidential delegate Manuel Millones confirmed the casualty toll in a television interview, while police opened an investigation into the cause of the crash and an alcohol test was administered.
President José Antonio Kast described the crash as a tragedy and expressed condolences to the victims' families.
