Police in India's West Bengal state have arrested 35 people following violent unrest sparked by the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl, whose body was found in a pond roughly 30 kilometres from Kolkata on 5 July.
The outcry turned deadly when a mob lynched an innocent man mistakenly believed to be involved in the crime. Authorities later identified four suspects in the girl's killing, and police shot dead the prime suspect, Pravash Mondal, on 7 July during an alleged escape attempt.
The case has heaped pressure on Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, whose Bharatiya Janata Party won state elections in May, as authorities struggle to contain public anger over the killing and the subsequent vigilante violence.
