Denmark is bracing for severe thunderstorms and potential cloudbursts sweeping across most of the country from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening, the Danish Meteorological Institute has warned. The unstable weather, driven by a low-pressure system over southern Scandinavia, threatens flooding with up to 30 millimetres of rain in half an hour in some areas.
The storms arrive abruptly after a sunny start to Sunday, with temperatures climbing near 30 degrees Celsius on the island of Zealand before deteriorating. The system is expected to move from Zealand, Bornholm, and Jylland overnight, bringing widespread thunder and rain by Monday morning. Lifeguard authorities have advised against swimming during the electrical storms.
The disruption breaks a spell of intense heat in Denmark, which on June 27 logged its highest-ever temperature of 37.0 degrees Celsius. Forecasters expect warm, sunny conditions to return later in the week.
