The Danish Cyclists' Union has proposed allowing all bike lane users over the age of 15 to choose whether to ride on the cycle path or the road, a measure the group says would improve safety for all road users. The proposal, backed by chairman Jens Peter Hansen, would be paired with a reduction of the car speed limit in urban zones to 30 kilometres per hour.
The push comes as data from the Danish Road Directorate shows that 38 percent of all traffic fatalities and injuries last year occurred on cycle paths. Separately, the Accident Analysis Group has reported that cycling accidents involving e-bikes have more than doubled over five years.
Jakob Bøving, director of the Council for Safe Traffic, has pushed back against the plan, arguing the proposal would create new problems rather than solving existing ones.
