A Copenhagen district court has fined KLM Royal Dutch Airlines 3 million kroner ($430,000) for misleading sustainability claims in radio advertisements, ruling Thursday that the carrier's messages gave consumers a distorted impression of its environmental impact.
The ads ran more than 3,000 times on Spotify and Danish radio stations during two periods in 2023 while KLM was blending just one percent sustainable aviation fuel into its supply. The Consumer Ombudsman reported the airline to police in January 2025 for violating rules against deceptive marketing, arguing the spots overstated the airline's green credentials. The court's fine matched prosecutors' demand and was calculated based on KLM's revenue in Denmark.
KLM, the Dutch flag carrier, is considering an appeal of the verdict.
