Daniele Compatangelo, an Italian television correspondent based in the United States and president of the White House Foreign Correspondents' Association, has died at age 50. Compatangelo was found dead at his home, with the cause believed to be related to cardiac problems, according to Italian news agencies.
Born in Savona in 1975 and raised in Turin, Compatangelo had a 25-year career spanning outlets including Sky and Secolo XIX, and had covered eight Olympic Games. He most recently worked as a Washington correspondent for the Italian broadcaster La7. His 2011 documentary "The Los Angeles Breakdown" received an honourable mention at the Southern California Journalism Awards.
Last month, Compatangelo conducted a phone interview with Donald Trump that sparked a diplomatic dispute with the Italian government after Trump claimed Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had "begged" him for a photograph.
