Thibaut Courtois left the pitch in tears with a left thigh injury as Belgium lost 2-1 to Spain in the World Cup quarter-final at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Thursday.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper was substituted in the 71st minute and replaced by Senne Lammens, who spilled Pau Cubarsí's shot in the 88th minute, allowing Mikel Merino to score the winner. The defeat compounded a difficult day for Belgium, as Youri Tielemans was forced out with a hamstring injury during warm-up.

Spain advance to face France in the semi-final on 14 July.
