Counter-terrorism detectives took charge of the investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe on Sunday, following her discovery with serious injuries at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor on 9 July. A 28-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of murder and later rearrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. The suspect was not previously known to the Prevent anti-extremism programme.
The killing has reignited a dispute over politician safety. Reform UK home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf claimed the government and police do not care about the security of Reform MPs. Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle affirmed that all MPs' security concerns are treated equally.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who will update the House of Commons on the investigation, offered Nigel Farage a meeting with the chairman of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee regarding protection arrangements. Farage had previously secured private funding for personal security, citing insufficient state provision.
