Colombia will resume coal exports to Israel, reversing a suspension imposed by former President Gustavo Petro in 2024 during the Gaza conflict, Trade Minister Mauricio Gómez announced Friday. Gómez displayed the signed decree authorising the shipments alongside President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office on August 7 and has moved swiftly to rebuild ties with Jerusalem.
Before the ban, Colombia was Israel's main coal supplier, with sales reaching roughly $450 million in 2023. However, the National Federation of Coal Producers warned that regaining market share will not be immediate, as Israel has since turned to South African suppliers and increased gas use in power plants. De la Espriella has also recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and pledged to open an embassy in Jerusalem.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar welcomed the shift, calling Colombia one of Israel's greatest friends. On Friday, Colombia's foreign minister also accepted the credentials of Israel's new ambassador, Vivian Aisen.
