Colombia's president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has announced plans to break diplomatic relations with Cuba and Nicaragua upon taking office on 7 August, marking a sharp reversal of his predecessor's foreign policy.
De la Espriella will close 14 Colombian embassies and roughly 15 consulates worldwide, including missions in Algeria, Azerbaijan, Barbados, the Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Hungary, Malaysia, Romania, Senegal and South Africa. He also suspended the opening of an embassy in the Palestinian territories, a project initiated by outgoing President Gustavo Petro.
In a pivot toward new priorities, the incoming administration plans to reopen Colombia's embassy in Jerusalem and establish a new diplomatic mission in Nigeria.
