Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed strong support for Brazil and rejected outside interference during a conversation with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The diplomatic backing comes in the wake of a United States announcement of 25% tariffs on certain Brazilian products under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. Brazil has responded by pledging to activate its Reciprocity Law and challenge the measures at the World Trade Organization.
During their talks, Xi affirmed China's commitment to assisting Brazil in defending its national sovereignty and urged both nations to collaboratively strengthen cooperation within the BRICS alliance.
The geopolitical alignment aligns with deepening economic integration between the two powers. Brazil and China recorded a historic trade volume of $171 billion in 2025, and in April 2026, Brazil emerged as the primary global buyer of Chinese automobile exports.
