Jason Arday has resigned as professor of sociology at the University of Cambridge with immediate effect, saying relentless accusations had taken a profound toll on him and his family. The university launched an investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments after receiving new information, while Jesus College is running a parallel process.
Arday, who became Cambridge's youngest Black professor in 2023 at age 37, faced allegations of plagiarism in his PhD thesis and other research, as well as questions over charity fundraising claims and visiting professorships that institutions said they had no record of. Ohio State University denied he was ever employed there. Arday attributed some errors to his autism and described a coordinated campaign to unseat him.
Simon & Schuster had planned to publish his memoir later this month, though his resignation may halt its release. Arday said he needed time to heal.
