Dozens of University of Cambridge academics have signed a letter demanding an independent investigation into how Jason Arday was appointed professor, arguing the institution itself must be scrutinised after his resignation over plagiarism allegations.
Organisers expect nearly 100 signatories by the time the letter reaches the vice-chancellor's office. Professor Priyamvada Gopal said the resignation does not end the matter, calling for scrutiny of potential mistakes in awarding Arday a prestigious chair. The letter also asks why the university's media messaging focused heavily on Arday's race and youth following his 2023 appointment. University of Sussex professor Alan Lester warned the case could be exploited by opponents of diversity initiatives.
Meanwhile, Arday's memoir Great and Unfortunate Things is scheduled for release on 11 August in the United States. Publisher Simon & Schuster continues to stand by the academic, citing his professionalism throughout the publication process. Arday claimed the publisher paid him 1.4 million for the work.
