Argentina has lodged a formal diplomatic protest with the United Kingdom over the presence of the Royal Navy offshore patrol vessel HMS Medway in South Atlantic waters it considers under Argentine jurisdiction. The protest note was delivered on Monday to the British embassy in Buenos Aires.
The Argentine government objected to the vessel's movements through its territorial sea, saying they were not notified in advance as required under bilateral agreements. Buenos Aires argued the incursion violates United Nations General Assembly Resolution 31/49, which urges both parties to refrain from unilateral actions in the disputed Falkland Islands area.
Argentina reasserted its sovereignty claims over the Falklands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands, which have been under British control since 1833. The diplomatic dispute surfaced shortly after Argentina's national football team defeated England in the 2026 World Cup semi-final and displayed a banner reading 'the Malvinas are Argentine'.
