Argentina faces potential disciplinary action from FIFA after players displayed a banner reading 'Las Malvinas Son Argentinas' following their 2-1 World Cup semifinal victory over England in Atlanta on Wednesday.
Lisandro Martínez, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero were among those photographed holding the banner, which was thrown down from the stands after late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez sealed the win. The display breaches FIFA's Stadium Code of Conduct, which prohibits political messages inside stadiums. The US authorities had classified the match as a high-risk event.
The Falkland Islands, an archipelago in the South Atlantic, are claimed by Argentina. FIFA previously fined the Argentine Football Association over a similar banner before a 2014 friendly against Slovenia.
