Amish Shah won the Democratic primary in Arizona's 1st congressional district on 22 July, defeating Marlene Galán-Woods, who was backed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Shah, a former state representative elected in 2018, 2020 and 2022, will face Republican Jay Feely in the November general election.
Feely defeated former state lawmaker Joseph Chaplik in the GOP primary. The seat is open after incumbent Republican David Schweikert ran for governor and lost to Andy Biggs in the Republican gubernatorial primary on 21 July.
The district, covering north-east Phoenix, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills and Paradise Valley, is considered one of Democrats' strongest opportunities to flip a Republican-held House seat.
