U.S. Representative Andy Biggs won the Republican nomination for governor of Arizona in Tuesday's primary, setting up a general election clash with incumbent Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs.
Biggs, a former chair of the House Freedom Caucus who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, defeated a field that included fellow Congressman David Schweikert and businessmen Ken Miceli and Scott Neely. Biggs was a central figure in efforts to overturn Trump's 2020 election loss and was later subpoenaed by the January 6 select committee. Hobbs, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, narrowly defeated Trump-backed Kari Lake in 2022.
The race is seen as a key test in one of five states Trump won in 2024 where a Democratic governorship is on the ballot. The Cook Political Report shifted the contest from toss-up to lean Democrat earlier this month, while two toss-up U.S. House districts in the state remain central to Democratic hopes of flipping the chamber.
