Nearly half of Germany's unbewmanaged motorway rest areas are in poor or very poor condition, according to a new ADAC survey of 50 sites nationwide, with the share of well-rated stops falling sharply since 2022.
The automobile club found 46 percent of facilities earned a failing grade, while only 18 percent were rated good — down from 40 percent four years ago. No site achieved the top mark. Toilets failed in nearly two-thirds of cases, and traces of vandalism were found at 96 percent of locations. The 'Am Stadtwald' stop on the A3 near Frankfurt ranked worst nationally, while Wüstenforst on the A2 in Saxony-Anhalt also received the lowest grade.
A handful of sites performed well, including Saaleaue Süd and Kapellenberg in Saxony-Anhalt and Röllingser Graben on the A44, the only stop in North Rhine-Westphalia to earn a good rating.
