A hunter shot and killed a wolf during an active attack on sheep in Vaggeryd municipality, southern Sweden, early on 24 July 2026. The hunter, who was out targeting wild boar, first attempted to scare the animal away before firing when that failed. The adult female was killed in a pasture on the same farm where two sheep had been killed the previous night. The County Administrative Board of Jönköping inspected the scene and determined the shooting was lawful, declining to refer the case to police. The carcass is being sent to the National Veterinary Institute for DNA analysis to confirm whether the same wolf was responsible for both nights' attacks.
Separately, local authorities in Tuscany have rejected claims that a wolf threatened a two-year-old boy. Mayor Marcello Pierucci said the family was inside their home while the dog was alone outside near the forest edge. The dog, Destiny, was killed and its remains were found in the woods the following day. The family maintains the animal saved the child.
