A reignited wildfire in southeastern France's Var department has been stabilised after scorching approximately 1,800 hectares, with most evacuation orders lifted on Sunday morning following the forced displacement of some 2,500 residents.
Prefect Simon Babre confirmed the fire's perimeter had stopped expanding, though nearly 1,500 firefighters remained deployed across the sector. The blaze, which began Friday afternoon near the Gros Bessillon massif, prompted the reopening of an emergency shelter in Lorgues where evacuees spent the night in a gymnasium. Residents in the village centres of Montfort-sur-Argens and Correns were allowed to return home.
This marked the fourth major blaze in central Var since 19 July, with nearly 5,600 hectares destroyed in July alone. Météo-France maintained heatwave alerts across 20 departments through Monday, while Interior Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that wildfires were broadly under control nationwide.
