A major wildfire burned out of control across roughly 21 hectares of nature reserve near the village of Oostrum in the southern Dutch province of Limburg on Monday, prompting authorities to issue an emergency NL-Alert to residents northeast of Venray.
The blaze, which broke out around midday near the De Rosmolen windmill, spread on both sides of a railway line and produced crown fire burning through tree canopies. Military Chinook water-bombing helicopters were deployed to assist ground firefighters. A nearby campsite was evacuated, with approximately 300 guests relocated to a hotel.
Rail operator NS suspended train services between Nijmegen and Venray until at least 23:00 local time.
